The Religious Education program exists to help Salem fulfill its mission that all people may grow as disciples of Christ. All ages are encouraged to participate in religious education. It is not necessary to be a member of the church to join in the classes and activities of the Religious Education program. The Board of Christian Education mission statement: The mission of the BOCE is to inspire children, youth, and adults toward an active, joyful, and growing faith in God. We work toward this mission by:
Sunday School (Preschool through 12th grade): Religious education for preschool, elementary, middle, and high school students takes place Sunday mornings 9-10 AM from September through May. Volunteer Sunday School teachers from the congregation complete Safe Sanctuary training and use curricula selected by the Board of Christian Education. Teams of 2-4 teachers choose either to rotate Sundays or to teach together each Sunday. Children in the preschool through fifth grade classes learn and practice Christian songs in the sanctuary from 9 to 9:15 AM. They spend the rest of the hour in the classrooms on the lower level of the church. The elementary Sunday School is divided into three classes: Pre-K/Kindergarten, Grades 1-3, and Grades 4-5. The grade groupings vary slightly from year to year depending on the number of children in each grade. All classes from pre-K through 12th grade use Seasons of the Spirit, a progressive lectionary-based curriculum. Sunday School Registration Form Sunday School (adult): Pastor Mark offers Sunday School for adults on Sunday mornings 9-10 AM from September through May. There is no formal curriculum; the group simply reads and discusses the Gospel reading for the week. Adults are welcome to drop in and participate as often as they wish.
