MUSIC PROGRAM
The Chancel Choir, under the direction of Claire Jurs, helps lead worship at least three Sundays each month. This choir is composed of older youth and adults and often nears two dozen voices. In addition to a large and growing repertoire of anthems classical and contemporary, the Chancel Choir has sung longer pieces in worship services highlighting works such as Schubert's Mass in G and Requiems by Reuter and others.
The Barry Robinson Chorus, a men's choir named in memory of a gifted musician, devout Christian, and beloved member of our congregation, sings in worship at least once each month. This group, also under the direction of Claire Jurs, and accompanied by Julie Sundby, has produced a CD which is available for purchase. Please contact the church if you would like a copy.
The Handbell Choir, under the direction of Cari Bass, helps lead worship on the third Sunday of each month. In addition to playing at Salem, this choir has shared its ministry of music with Four Winds Manor Nursing Home in Verona and other venues away from the church. Indeed, all our adult choirs have shared their music with the wider community.
Rounding out our Music Department are Youth Bells, a children's handbell choir under the direction of Kelli Malueg; the Children's Choir, under the direction of Colleen Bass and Krista Nechvatal; and the Youth Choir and Youth Band. The Children's Choir, which rehearses as part of the Sunday School hour, sings in worship on the first Sunday of each month. The other groups are involved in worship periodically.
The church's Music Director is Dawn Lingard, and she also serves as the pianist/organist who plays for most of our worship services.
Salem's annual Music Sunday, when all our choirs lead in worship, is a highlight of our program year and generally takes place in the spring. There has also been a Spirituals Concert in the spring and other special performances throughout the year. Watch our calendar for notification of these events.
